AN 问安（AN Apothecary）

We are a modern apothecary, hand-poured in Shanghai, rooted in the Eastern understanding that the body is not a machine to be fixed — it is a garden to be tended. Long before wellness became an industry, our ancestors had already mapped the relationship between plant and nervous system, between scent and sleep, between smoke and stillness.

We translated that archive into four candles

Origin Story

There is a book. Written in 1596 by the physician Li Shizhen, the Bencao Gangmu — the Compendium of Materia Medica — catalogued 1,892 botanical remedies with a precision that would not be surpassed for centuries. It was not a book of poetry. It was not mythology. It was science — the kind that grows from soil, not laboratories.

The Name

AN — in English, the most elemental of articles. An experience. An object. An offering. Its very simplicity is its luxury: the confidence of something that needs no introduction.

安 — in Chinese, the character at the heart of Eastern wellbeing. 安神. 安稳. 平安. Not merely the absence of illness, but the return of the spirit to its rightful place.

问 — wèn — to ask. To inquire. To greet.

Put them together and you have our entire philosophy in two characters: a gentle inquiry into your wellbeing. Every candle we make is a question asked in smoke:

How We Work

Every candle is hand-poured in our Shanghai workshop using 100% natural soy wax, lead-free cotton wicks, and fragrance compounds sourced with the same obsessiveness that Li Shizhen brought to his catalogue. 

The apothecary was never meant to be a factory. It was meant to be a place where someone who understood plants took the time to understand you — and handed you exactly what you needed.

That is what we are trying to build: a small, rigorous, deeply warm practice of Eastern care, for the restless and the overwhelmed, wherever they are in the world.
